When should my Travel Insurance start from?

  • Updated

Your policy should start from the date you want your cover to begin. For Single Trip policies with Cancellation cover, cancellation benefits start as soon as you buy the policy.

For Annual Multi-Trip policies, cancellation cover starts when you book each trip or from your policy start date; whichever is later.

Single Trip policies

  • Your policy must start before your trip begins; there’s no cover if your trip starts before your insurance does.
  • Single Trip policies can be purchased up to 365 days in advance of your trip start date
  • If your policy includes Cancellation, that cover starts as soon as you pay your premium or from the commencement date shown on your schedule.

Annual Multi-Trip (AMT) policies

  • You can choose a start date that suits when you want your 12-month period of cover to begin.
  • You can choose a start date up to 60 days in advance.
  • For each trip, if your policy includes Cancellation, cover starts when you book the trip or the start date on your policy schedule, whichever is later.
  • If a trip begins before your policy start date, that trip won’t be covered.

General rule — your trip must start after your policy starts

  • Cover cannot begin after you have already left your home country.
