Can I travel if I'm pregnant?

  • Updated

You may travel while pregnant, but childbirth at or after 32 weeks for a single pregnancy (or 24 weeks for a multiple pregnancy) is not covered under any section of this policy.

What is covered

  • Pregnancy and childbirth are not treated as an illness or injury under the policy.
  • Cover is automatically provided for complications of pregnancy and childbirth, provided your doctor and midwife are aware of your travel plans and you are not travelling against medical advice.
  • Examples of complications include miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, emergency caesarean section, and premature birth.

Cancellation if you become pregnant after buying the policy

If your policy includes cancellation cover, you can claim for cancellation if you become pregnant after buying the policy or booking your trip (whichever is later) and you will be over 32 weeks pregnant (single pregnancy) or 24 weeks pregnant (multiple pregnancy) by your return date.

What is not covered

In summary, childbirth at or after the weeks listed above is not covered, and you are not covered for pregnancy related claims if you do not comply with your carrier’s policy for pregnant travellers at check-in or boarding.

  • Childbirth at or after the 32nd week for a single pregnancy, or the 24th week for a multiple pregnancy, is not considered a complication and is not covered under any section of this policy.
  • You are not covered for claims arising from pregnancy if, at the time of checking in or boarding, you fail to meet the carrier’s policy for pregnant women.

Before you book or travel

  1. Make sure your doctor and midwife are aware of your travel plans, and that you are not travelling against medical advice.
  2. Check your travel dates against how many weeks pregnant you will be during the trip. If you will be on or after 32 weeks (single pregnancy) or 24 weeks (multiple pregnancy) at any point, childbirth at or after these weeks is not covered under any section of this policy.
  3. Check with your airline, ferry, cruise company, or other transport provider before you book, as they may have their own restrictions for pregnant travellers."
