What is the maximum trip duration?

  • Updated

The maximum trip duration depends on whether you have a Single Trip or an Annual Multi-Trip policy, and on your level of cover. Single trips can last up to 12 months, while Annual Multi-Trip policies have shorter limits per trip and a yearly maximum.

Single Trip policies:

  • Trips can be insured for up to 12 months, provided the trip length does not exceed the number of days shown on your policy schedule.

  • Your trip must start and end in your home country, and cover cannot begin after you leave home.

  • You are not covered for any part of a trip scheduled to last longer than your policy allows.

  • For all sections except Cancellation, cover includes up to 36 hours’ travel each way between home and your departure point.

Annual Multi-Trip policies:

  • Trips can last up to 45 days per trip, depending on your destination and age.

  • For trips to the USA, Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean, the maximum is 45 days if you’re aged 0–70, or 35 days if you’re aged 71 or over.

  • Each trip must stay within the maximum per-trip limit for your level of cover.

  • Across all trips in one policy year, the maximum total time you can be covered for is 183 days.

  • For all sections except Cancellation, cover includes up to 36 hours’ travel each way.

Optional trip-length upgrade (Gold, Gold Plus and Platinum only):

  • If you are aged 70 or under, you may be able to extend each trip to 50 or 55 days for any destination.

  • If you are aged 71 or over, you may be able to extend trips to 50 or 55 days, except for travel to the USA, Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean, where the limit remains 35 days.

Unexpected delays:

  • If an insured event beyond your control prevents you from returning home on time, the insurer may extend cover for up to 30 extra days at no charge, provided you return as soon as reasonably possible.

  • This is an emergency extension only and does not increase the trip length you can plan in advance.
