Gold, Gold Plus and Platinum personal accident cover can pay a benefit for death, permanent total disablement, loss of sight or loss of limb caused solely by an accident during your trip, where the policy’s 12-month requirements are met. Benefit amounts vary by policy level and age. There is no excess for the included personal accident. Claims must be notified within 12 months of the accident date. Exclusions include pre-existing injuries, sickness, disease or a gradually worsening physical or mental condition, and sporting, adventure or winter sports activities where personal accident cover is specifically excluded.

Platinum personal accident includes:

  • Permanent total disablement, aged under 16 or over 75: not covered.
  • Excess: Nil.

When personal accident can apply

Personal accident can apply if an accident during your trip is the sole cause of one of these outcomes after 12 months:

  • Death.
  • Permanent total disablement.
  • Loss of sight.
  • Loss of limb.

Permanent total disablement means the accident stops you from working in any job you are qualified for, lasts for 12 months, and is not expected to improve at the end of those 12 months, as decided by our medical adviser.


Key definitions

Loss of limb means permanent severance of an entire hand or foot, or total and permanent loss of use of an entire hand or foot.

Loss of sight means total and irrecoverable loss of sight. For both eyes, this means your name is added to the Register of Blind Persons on the authority of a fully qualified ophthalmic specialist. For one eye, this means the sight remaining after correction is 3/60 or less on the Snellen scale.


What is not included

Personal accident does not include claims for death, loss or disablement caused directly or indirectly by:
  • Anything listed in the General exclusions. General conditions also apply.
  • Sickness, disease, or a physical or mental condition that is gradually worsening.
  • An injury that existed before the start of the trip.
  • A claim not notified within 12 months of the accident date.
  • Taking part in a sporting, adventure or winter sports activity where personal accident cover is specifically excluded.
