When personal liability can apply

Personal liability can apply where an accident during your trip leads to a claim against you for:
  • Accidental bodily injury to a person who is not a member of your family, household or employed by you.
  • Loss of, or damage to, property that does not belong to you.
  • Loss of, or damage to, property that is not in your charge or control, or in the charge or control of your family, household or employee.
  • Damage to your temporary holiday accommodation, where the accommodation does not belong to you, your family, household or employee.

What is not included

Personal liability does not include:
  1. Anything listed in the General exclusions. General conditions also apply.
  2. The policy excess, unless your selected excess option changes this.
  3. Fines imposed by a Court of Law or other relevant bodies.
  4. Claims linked to winter sports unless the appropriate additional premium has been paid and is shown on your policy schedule.
  5. Claims linked to a sporting, adventure or winter sports activity where personal liability is specifically excluded.
  6. Liability under an agreement, unless the liability would have existed without that agreement.
  7. Owning, handling or looking after any animal.
  8. Owning or using a firearm.
  9. Owning or using a horse-drawn or motorised vehicle.
  10. Owning or using a waterborne, motorised, mechanical or towed vehicle, including e-bikes and e-scooters, except manually propelled watercraft.
  11. Owning or using any aircraft, including unpowered flight.
  12. Occupying land or buildings, except temporarily for the purpose of the trip.
  13. Owning land or buildings.
  14. Carrying out any trade or profession, including medical negligence claims.
  15. Any deliberate act.
  16. Infecting another person with an infectious illness, virus or disease.
  17. Liability covered under another insurance policy.

If you use a mechanical or motorised vehicle, make sure you have suitable third-party insurance. Personal liability under this travel policy does not provide that cover.

Before you travel

Check whether your planned activities involve animals, vehicles, watercraft, aircraft, winter sports or adventure activities.

These activities can change whether personal liability applies. Check your policy schedule and activity wording before taking part.
