Listed winter sports activities

Winter sports cover amounts

Winter sports cover can include:
  • Ski equipment: £500.
  • Single article limit for ski equipment: £200.
  • Ski hire: £10 per day, up to £150.
  • Delayed ski equipment: £150.
  • Ski pack: £400.
  • Piste closure: £35 per day, up to £350.

Ski hire, delayed ski equipment and piste closure have Nil excess. For ski equipment and ski pack, check your policy schedule for the excess that applies.

Ski equipment

Ski equipment cover can apply if your own or hired ski equipment is lost, stolen or damaged during your trip.

Owned ski equipment claims are calculated by age:
  • Up to 12 months old: 85% of the purchase price.
  • Up to 24 months old: 65% of the purchase price.
  • Up to 36 months old: 45% of the purchase price.
  • Up to 48 months old: 30% of the purchase price.
  • Up to 60 months old: 20% of the purchase price.
  • Over 60 months old: 0% of the purchase price.

Ski hire can apply if you need to hire replacement ski equipment because your own ski equipment is accidentally lost, stolen or damaged during the insurance period.

Delayed ski equipment can apply if your own ski equipment is delayed on your outward journey for at least 12 hours. You need a written report from the carrier or tour representative, and receipts will be needed if you claim.

Ski pack

Ski pack can apply to the unused part of ski pack costs paid, or contracted to be paid, before your trip began.

This can apply if you do not cut your trip short, but a medical practitioner in the resort certifies that you cannot ski or use the ski pack facilities because of serious injury or illness during the trip.

You also need confirmation that no refund is available for the unused items.

Piste closure
Piste closure only applies:
  • Between 1 December and 15 April for the Northern hemisphere.
  • Between 1 May and 30 September for the Southern hemisphere.

Piste closure can apply if lack of snow closes your resort and prevents you from skiing.

It can help with:
  • A daily benefit towards travel costs to another resort; or
  • A daily benefit if your resort stays closed and no other resort is available.

Piste closure is limited to the pre-booked period of insurance for your trip.


What is not included

Winter sports cover does not include:
  • Anything listed in the General exclusions. General conditions also apply.
  • The excess shown for your level of cover and selected options.
  • Loss, burglary or theft of ski equipment if you do not get a written police report within 24 hours.
  • Ski equipment lost, damaged or delayed in transit if you do not notify the carrier immediately and get a carrier report, or follow up in writing within 7 days.
  • Loss, destruction, damage or theft caused by confiscation or detention by customs or other officials.
  • Ski equipment stolen from an unattended vehicle unless the policy’s locked, covered and forced-entry requirements are met.
  • A lost or stolen lift pass if you cannot prove ownership of the original pass and the replacement pass bought in resort.
  • Winter sports equipment left unattended in a public place, except for skis, poles or snowboards left in a ski rack between 10am and 8pm where reasonable care has been taken.
  • Winter sports equipment lost or damaged by people it was not designed for.
  • Ski pack claims not confirmed as medically necessary by Zurich Assist.
  • Ski pack claims without a medical certificate from the attending medical practitioner abroad.
  • Piste closure claims without confirmation from the local representative.
  • Piste closure claims where not all skiing facilities are completely closed.
  • Piste closure claims where the lack of snow was known or publicly available when you bought the policy or booked the trip.

Piste closure claims where the holiday resort is not at least 1,000 metres above sea level.


What you need to do

For lost or stolen ski equipment, report the loss, burglary or theft to the police within 24 hours and get a written police report.

For ski equipment lost, damaged or delayed in transit:
  • Notify the carrier immediately.
  • Get a written carrier report or Property Irregularity Report.
  • Follow up in writing within 7 days if you cannot get the report immediately.
  • Keep receipts for replacement hire or related costs.

For ski pack or piste closure claims, keep medical evidence, refund confirmation or local representative confirmation, depending on the claim type.
