When travel delay or abandonment can apply

Travel delay or abandonment can apply when the departure of your outward or return flight, sea crossing, coach or train from or to your home country is delayed by more than 24 hours beyond the time on your travel ticket because of:

  • Strike or industrial action, as long as you could not reasonably have expected it to affect your trip when you bought the policy.
  • Adverse weather conditions, where the weather is the underlying and continuing cause.
  • Mechanical or electrical breakdown of the aircraft, coach, train or sea vessel.

Abandonment only applies to your outward journey. It applies if you choose not to continue with your trip after a qualifying delay.

What is not included

Travel delay and abandonment do not include:
  • Anything listed in the General exclusions. General conditions also apply.
  • The abandonment excess, unless a zero-excess option applies and is shown on the policy schedule.
  • Claims where you did not check in before the intended departure time.
  • Claims where you do not get written confirmation from the airline, shipping, coach or train company showing the delay period and reason.
  • Claims caused by the temporary or permanent withdrawal from service of the aircraft, coach, train or sea vessel on the orders or recommendation of the Civil Aviation Authority, a Port Authority, or a similar body in any country.
  • Claims caused by natural disasters, unless natural disaster cover is shown on your policy schedule and the extra premium has been paid.
  • Claims caused by missing a flight, ferry, ship, cruise ship, coach or train that is not part of your outward or return journey.

What evidence may be needed

If your transport is delayed, you must check in before the intended departure time. Keep any proof that you checked in, as this may be needed if you make a claim. You must also get written confirmation from the airline, shipping, coach or train company showing the period of the delay and the reason for it.
