Do I need to declare countries I travel through on the way to my destination?

  • Updated

If you are travelling to more than one country, make sure every country you visit or travel through is covered by the geographical area listed on your insurance policy.

What this article helps you do

This article explains what to check if you travel through another country on your way to your main destination.

Applies to

  • AllClear Single Trip and Annual Multi-Trip policies
  • Multi-country journeys
  • Journeys involving transit or stopovers

Single Trip policies

A Single Trip policy covers you for travel only within the geographical area you selected when you bought your policy.

If you travel between countries by car, train, coach or bus, you will not be covered if you travel through a country outside your selected geographical area unless that country has been declared on your policy.

Eligibility, terms and exclusions apply. Please refer to your policy documents for full details.

Annual Multi-Trip policies

Annual Multi-Trip policies also have a geographical region that determines where your trips can take place.

Before you travel, check that all the countries you plan to visit or travel through are included in the Region covered by your policy.

If you need to travel through a country that is not covered, and no stopover rule applies, talk to an adviser before you travel.

Eligibility, terms and exclusions apply. Please refer to your policy documents for full details.

If you are flying

Specific exceptions apply to flight stopovers.

If your flight stops in a country outside your covered area, your policy will cover you there for up to 24 hours.

This applies to both Single Trip and Annual Multi-Trip policies, on both your outward and return journeys.

If you are going on a cruise

Where your policy includes cruise cover, Gold Plus and Platinum policy wording includes a separate rule for cruise stopovers.

If your cruise stops in a country outside your covered area, your policy will cover you there for up to 24 hours.

However, if a country is listed as a destination on your cruise itinerary, it is treated as a destination rather than a stopover.

  • Silver and Gold policies do not cover cruises.
  • Gold Plus policies must add the Cruise cover as an optional upgrade for this to be included in the policy. Platinum policies include Cruise cover as standard.
