What's covered under Gadgets and Valuables?

  • Updated

Gadgets and valuables are a defined list of items that sit within Personal property on Gold, Gold Plus and Platinum, and they have their own total limit.

What counts as “gadgets and valuables”

This includes items such as mobiles (and accessories), cameras and other electrical equipment, computers/tablets, jewellery and watches, and more, including antiques.

What limits apply (by tier)

These limits are per person insured and sit within Personal property:

  • Gold: total gadgets and valuables limit £250 (Personal property excess £75)
  • Gold Plus: total gadgets and valuables limit £450 (Personal property excess £75)
  • Platinum: total gadgets and valuables limit £500 (Personal property excess Nil)

Optional upgrade “Gadgets and valuables extension” (only if shown on your policy schedule)

If you bought this upgrade, it extends the total gadgets and valuables limit to £2,500, with a maximum of £1,000 for any one item.

It can also include:

  • Fraudulent use after loss/theft: up to £1,000, up to 24 hours from discovery, with an itemised bill
  • Hiring a temporary replacement gadget: up to £100

Extension excess (if the extension applies):

  • Gold: Nil
  • Gold Plus: £75
  • Platinum: £75

Key situations that aren’t covered (common examples)

Here are the main “watch-outs” that often change what you can claim:

  • Antiques: listed as gadgets and valuables, but not covered for loss, theft or damage under Personal property
  • Checked-in baggage: gadgets, valuables and/or money left as checked-in baggage aren’t covered
  • Unattended in public: not covered if left unattended in a public place (or accessible to the public)
  • Not properly secured: not covered if gadgets/valuables aren’t with you unless stored in a locked safety deposit box/safe, or locked in your accommodation
  • Theft evidence: theft claims need evidence of force or forced entry

  • Sports gear while in use: excluded (except ski equipment on winter sports trips, where the right premium was paid)

If you need to claim

  • Report loss, burglary or theft to the police within 24 hours and get a written report.
  • If you’re claiming for fraudulent use, report it to your service provider within 24 hours of discovery (and keep the itemised bill).

How claims are settled (age of item)

Payments are based on the nearest equivalent replacement cost as new, minus deductions for age/wear. For example:

  • Mobile phones and tablets over 48 months old: replacement cost as new less 85%
  • Other gadgets and valuables over 48 months old: replacement cost as new less 80%
